The year is progressing fast and with Easter behind us we are looking forward to the cooler months ahead. Even in Winter our region is just wonderful. Clear cool mornings and sunny days.
Up here in the Northern Rivers and S.E. Queensland Soups are slowly replacing salads.
Usually the ‘Southerners’ from Sydney and Melbourne start setting up their Winter lodging. Many of our fellow Australians move to the warmer climates in the cold months, like New Yorkers migrating to Florida for the winter.
Fighting off the cold is the goal of these seasonal travellers . It is also one of the most important functions of our immune system and our Library posts this month focus on our immune system and the role of a healthy microbiome in promoting good immune function.
When we get cold, our body uses energy to fight off cold. If your immune system is strong you can fight off illness and cold. That said, many people who have less stamina and less resistance, like the elderly, infants and people already suffering from illness need to boost their immune system for the winter and the easiest way to do that is to have a healthy colon.
You never know where viruses and bacteria come from, a coin you touched then rubbed your eyes, filtered air in a waiting room or even something you ate. Once in the body they start to multiply because we are perfect hosts for them, warm and moist, and so the cycle starts, you begin to feel sick and then….. Your immune system steps in, like a combat soldier who means business. White blood cells
and other chemicals seek out and destroy the threats. In addition to this, our bodies react in different ways, like a sneeze, to boot out a virus in your nose.
Your immune system knows that there’s a problem. It identifies the good cells and knows which ones should not be there.
Some interesting connections have been made in recent years about immune function and how food allergies like lactose intolerance can affect the immune function. We know that your best line of defence is good intestinal bacteria.
So keep eating healthy with some of the fabulous gluten free recipes in our library and prepare yourself for the upcoming change of season. This time of year is a good time to do a kidney and liver cleanse. Now more than ever, we want to be vigilant with our immune system.
Wishing you the best in Health
